‘the BTD British designer black book’ - statement lighting

Clever lighting can transform the look, feel and functionality of a space, but can be left as an afterthought when it comes to design. Not only is lighting functional, but designed well it accentuates architectural features, changes spatial perception and most importantly sets the ambiance and mood of a space. On top of thinking carefully about positioning and the impact light has on a room, we love to choose lighting that makes a statement.

Here are some of the go-to British designers we are using right now for statement lighting:

BEST FOR OVER A DINING TABLE

Lee Broom – Carousel Large in Polished Gold

Design Tip: Ensure proper placement - ideally the light should hang 60-80cm above the table. However, make sure you sit in each seat and move around the table to check it is not impeding any views

BEST PORTABLE LIGHTS

Tom Dixon – Stone LED Portable Table Lamp

Design Tip: We love to use portable lamps on side tables in larger rooms that have no power to add extra depth and layering to a lighting design.

BEST FOR SIDEBOARDS

Lee Broom – Eclipse Table Lamp in Gold

Design Tip: Choose a light without a shade for a sideboard to give you more space to style items of differing sizes and heights beside it.

BEST FOR QUIRKINESS

Pooky – Calico Wall Lights

Design Tip: Place a quirky light in a focal point such as an entry way or in a surprising spot like a downstairs cloakroom or reading nook – as these are sure to make spark a conversation with guests.

BEST WALL SCONCES

J Adams & Co – Flume wall lights

Design Tip: Remember to place a light either side of a bathroom mirror to help eliminate shadows on the face and provide even illumination.

BEST FOR CHANDELIERS

Lee Broom – Eclipse Chandelier

Design Tip: Consider maintenance and cleaning when installing a chandelier. If placing in a hard-to-reach location, choose one with a lower surface area so you don't have an impossible dusting task on your hands.

Best for versatility

Tom Dixon – Melt portable Copper LED

Design Tip: Invest in some portable LED lights that allow you to move them to different areas in the home. For example use them to add ambiance to a home bar or bring a warm glow to an alfresco dinner.

BEST FOR USE OF MATERIALS

CTO Lighting - ARTÉS Floor light

Design Tip – Ensure your floor light is dimmable to make it work hard as both an accent and task light

BEST FOR LIGHTS AS ART

TOM KIRK - reed wall installation

Design Tip – Play around with positioning and angles with your lighting, as they can cast shadows on walls or archtectural features that add depth and intrigue to a room.

BEST FOR Large spaces

cameron design house - kuulas 110

Design Tip – For really impactful lighting design in large spaces, talk to your lighting designer about incorporting kinetic lighting. This is lighting that moves or changes in response to sound, motion or other stimuli - creating something really special in a commercial space.
