‘diy masterclass’ - how to pick the paint shade that’s right for you
Choosing the right paint colour can often feel like a minefield of choices, many of which look exactly the same. People often shy away from bold colours or deep rich colours however these can make a space feel very luxurious and special. When choosing paint firstly think of the ambience you want to create in the room. Dark and moody or bright and light. Also look at the natural light in the room and the shadows you get throughout the day. You need to live in a space a little before diving in with the paint. This is how to plan the room:
1. think about natural light
Spend some time in the room you want to paint at different times of the day. This will show you when the best light is, and if the room gets enough light
2. don’t be swayed by trends
When trying to pick a colour, think about what YOU like and not what you see in the trend lead publications. You have to live with the colour you choose and see it every day. Be aware some of the trend colours can date very quickly. If you like a bright and airy feeling space go light. If you love a cosy den then pick something rich and warm. Also remember the furniture you have, make sure it all will sit together in harmony.
3. collect the swatches
Start with swatches to pick the tones you want. There are so many you can choose from
4. get lots of samples
Once you have the colour range you like, get LOTS of sample pots and pick different suppliers as some have more depth of colour, or a wider choice. I love Farrow and Ball and Little Greene for the pigments they use as they always seem to pop.
5. test, test, test
Paint quite big sample areas close to windows so you can see how the colour really looks in the natural light. Always paint 3 coats on so you can see the real developed colour as it can change with a few coats
4. give it a go
f you are still unsure over your choice, paint a wall in the room. It can be easily painted over if you don’t like it
5. gloss? eggshell? matt?
Always remember there are different finishes to paint which you can play with. I always love matt on the walls and eggshell on the woodwork always in the same colour. Check the paint is a washable or wipe down paint just incase of any marks
4. before you start, it’s about the prep
Finally for woodwork like banisters and doors, make sure you sand down and prep the wood before painting
5. and don’t forget…
If you are decorating a room with water like a bathroom or kitchen make sure they paint is waterproof paint!
